About Dental Desensitization Systems

Dental Desensitization Systems (DDS) is dedicated to transforming dental care for neurodivergent patients. Our clinically proven system empowers caregivers, reduces the need for sedation, and helps patients achieve better lifelong oral health.

Our Vision

Our Mission

Let’s stop wasting 4 Billion a year to sedate patients unnecessarily.

Join us in creating a Neurodivergent friendly dental experience.  Let’s shatter decades of misconceptions and lead others to see that sedation for routine care can be eliminated using a clinically proven protocol called desensitization.

Below we will show you how this concept can transform the dental experience of IDD patients.  We will explore the evidence, the cost savings, and how it’s already working successfully in managed care and private practice settings.  Finally we will introduce the brilliant minds working together to make this happen and explain how to implement it in a variety of situations where dental care is a challenge.

Dental Desensitization

Clinically Proven Protocol with a Track Record of Success

This protocol has been developed and consistently improved over the last 8 years. Several Pilots, university-led clinical studies, and real-world dental visits have pointed to a simple idea. With enough exposure to sensory stimuli before a dental visit, IDD patients find a routine dental visit less intimidating and tolerate it without sedation. In a Baylor University study, 79% of participants who previously required sedation could now have their routine care visit in a typical dental office.
The Data that supports our protocol:

  • 50% reduction in gingival inflammation after 3 months using 3-sided brushing.
  • 90% of patients are compliant with a “mock exam” with a therapist after three sessions.
  • 79% show compliance for the first dental visit after desensitization therapy.

Clinically Proven Tools that are constantly improved based on user feedback

Dental Desensitization Kit - Product Image

The components within the DDS kit are clinically proven to help desensitize patients to a routine dental visit that includes an exam, cleaning, x-rays and fluoride.  After practicing with a caregiver or therapist, 79% of patients are able to get a routine dental visit without sedation.

Also included in the training is the critical training to ensure outstanding oral care at home to prevent common dental problems.  The whole process is simple to learn and implement – that’s why it works.

A sound homecare protocol that is both efficient and effective.

Included in the certification program is a set of strategies and tools to help caregivers provide efficient and effective oral care at home. Dr. Dent leads caregivers and therapists through brushing and flossing without injury to the caregiver or patient. By using a Triple Bristle toothbrush, a custom mouth prop and a long handle flosser, he will show that IDD patients can benefit from a high level of plaque control.

Dr. Dent presents some of the most common challenges and the solutions so that patients have lifelong oral health without the need for expensive and invasive dental procedures.

Cost Savings

The average cost of sedation is approximately $600 or more depending on where it is administered.  Since 4.2 million individuals require sedation twice annually due to behavioral or sensory issues, approximately 5.04 billion dollars is spent annually on sedation for routine dental care visits.  We know from the literature that Desensitization works to eliminate the need for sedation in up to 79% of patients who previously needed it.  If implemented, the savings to the health care system can be upwards of 3.98 Billion.  This does not take into account the savings of the preventative protocol which only increases the potential financial impact.

Success in desensitization is systematic and reproducible - it works consistently.

Dr. Dent, father to a son on the spectrum, has several dental practices that cater specifically to the special needs population and can troubleshoot the most challenging situations to empower patients and caregivers.

By providing the best clinically proven tools and showing people how to use them we can ensure a successful outcome for everyone involved.

The end result, is capable caregivers and clinicians who can provide care for this vulnerable patient population.

Turn-key onboarding and certification

Coming Soon: DDS will provide a dental desensitization certification program that empowers caregivers to desensitize IDD patients to a dental visit using a specially designed set of tools that we provide with the training.  The result is empowerment of the IDD patient to go to a dental visit without needing sedation or general anesthesia.  This has countless benefits including:

  • A dignified visit for the patient that socially integrates them into society and improves wellbeing.
  • Ability for the caregiver to consider the treatment plan without the rushed coercive feel of a sedation visit.
  • Greater access to care since patients can visit many local dentists willing to accept cooperative IDD patients.

Ready to join forces in improving Neurodivergent dental care?

We are passionate about spreading the knowledge and tools necessary to make a real change for this vulnerable patient cohort all across the U.S.  By working together, we can train and implement these powerful principles and tools in your organization.
